Candy Apples Recipe / Receta de Manzanas de Caramelo

I cannot imagine going through fall without having at least one candy apple. I love them. They bring back so many childhood memories at county fairs and carnivals they were and still are one of my favorite fall treats. I love how sweet and crunchy they are, but so bad for my teeth lol. The hardest part is getting in that first bite!
Candy apples are great for parties because they"re easy to make, and so inexpensive. I bought a 3lb bag of apples, corn syrup, and sugar for under $5, and I still had enough apples leftover. You can use any kind of apple that you like best, I love fuji apples because they"re crisp and sweet.

Ingredients:

Apples (For this recipe I used 6 but had enough for 8 apples)
1 1/2 Cup of Sugar
1/4 Cup Corn Syrup
1/2 Cup Water
Red Food Coloring
Wooden sticks
Candy Thermometer
Parchment paper
Toppings (Optional)

Preparation:

Wash and dry the apples. Remove the stems. Then insert the wooden stick into the apple to about half way in. Also line a baking sheet with parchment paper. Set aside.
Next in a medium saucepan without turning it on yet, add in sugar, corn syrup, water.
Heat on low. Use a whisk to mix all ingredients until dissolved, and add in food coloring.
Now just wait...but do keep an eye on the syrup. And BE CAREFUL! It gets very hot and hurts so much. If you have a candy thermometer on hand place the tip in and watch for it to reach about 290-300 °F. But if you don"t have a candy thermometer, don"t worry I have a tip for you below.
After about 25 minutes your caramel will be ready for dipping. Grab your apples by the stick, dip and swirl them in the caramel syrup one by one until evenly coated. If its easier tilt the saucepan just a bit to coated it all. If you"re adding any toppings add them immediately. (Work fast!)
Place apples on parchment paper and let cool. And enjoy with your little ones!

Tips:
If you don"t have a candy thermometer simply fill a cup with water, when caramel starts to thicken and bubble grab an extra stick and dip into caramel then place it in water. If after 10 seconds caramel gets hard then it"s ready for dipping.
Work fast! I left my caramel on just so it wouldn"t harden, it made dipping easier.
If using these as party favors; place them in cellophane bags with cute decorative ribbons.

What is your favorite fall treat?
