Now that the holidays have come and gone, we are looking for healthier choices in our foods whether it’s to lose some weight or to prepare ourselves for Lent. Many Catholics know all about Lent and depending on your traditions, most abstain from eating meat on Fridays during these 40 days.

To some it might be difficult if you’re used to eating meat most days, like my dad who always had to have some type of meat for his dinner, but you might be surprised to know that there are some delicious meatless foods full of the same flavor or maybe even better.

Stick around, let me tell you a little bit about my familia, traditions and food. I will be sharing with you a family favorite for Lent, Tostadas de Jaiba or Crabmeat Tostadas.

So for those that know I am Mexican born, American raised. My family comes from the northern and central regions of Mexico, when I married I was welcomed into a family with somewhat different foods and traditions. My husband’s sister-in-law, Gaby and her family live closest to us, I spend most weekends at her house learning all about the food and culture from Veracruz. And since I love learning I’m always in the kitchen looking to help. Over the weekend I learned how to make salsa yucateca thanks to Doña Lupe and cochinita pibil from Dulce, Gaby’s mother.

For Latinos, food is everything; it’s how we welcome guests into our home, and how we keep our traditions alive. In my family, Lent is something we try to do every year. One of my favorite ways of staying away from red meats is by eating seafood, I love it. Since I was very young my mom made tostadas de jaiba every year to celebrate Lent, crab meat is my favorite and today I share that love for jaiba with my own family. I’d love to share this recipe with you, and hope you too add it to you Lent recipes.

Tostadas de Jaiba (Crab Meat Tostadas)

Ingredients:

16 oz. Crab Meat, shredded

2 roma tomatoes

2 serrano or jalapeño peppers, minced

1/4 onion, diced

handful of cilantro

1 avocado, diced

1/2 cup of Clamato Juice

5 tablespoons of ReaLime juice

Salt and Pepper to taste

Corn Tostadas to serve

Instructions:

In a mixing bowl, add crabmeat and diced ingredients.

Add in ReaLime juice as well as the Clamato juice, salt and pepper, mix.

Serve over corn tostadas and enjoy!

As you can tell these are very simple to make, but packed with flavor. The Clamato juice gives a unique flavor to all your Lent recipes, in fact it goes along perfectly with most seafood recipes. During Lent I always make sure to have some stocked up for my cocteles de camarón (shrimp cocktails), soups, micheladas and even for my botanas. There’s so much you can do with Clamato.

Ahora que los días festivos han terminado, muchos  están buscando opciones más saludables en los alimentos, ya sea para perder algo de peso o preparándose para la Cuaresma. Sí eres católico, tal vez sepas todo acerca de la Cuaresma y las tradiciones que se acostumbran en esta epoca. La mayoría se abstienen de comer carne los viernes durante estos 40 días. Para algunos puede ser algo difícil si estás acostumbrado a comer carne todos los días, como mi padre, que siempre tiene que tener algún tipo de carne para la cena. Pero tal vez te sorprenda que existen deliciosas comidas sin carne llenas del mismo sabor o tal vez incluso hasta mejor que las recetas con carne roja.

Hoy me encantaría contarte un poco sobre mi familia, tradiciones y comida. Voy a compartir con ustedes una receta favorita de la familia para la Cuaresma: Tostadas de Jaiba.

Como algunos ya saben, yo nací en México y fui criada en USA. Mi familia proviene de las regiones del norte y centro de México, cuando me casé entre en una familia con algunas tradiciones y alimentos diferentes a los que yo acostumbraba. Y como la cuñada de mi esposo, Gaby y su familia son los únicos que viven cerca de nosotros, pasamos la mayor parte de los fines de semana en su casa aprendiendo todo sobre su comida y la cultura de Veracruz. Y como me encanta aprender siempre estoy en la cocina en busca de ayudarles con alguna receta. Este pasado fin de semana aprendí  cómo hacer salsa Yucateca gracias a Doña Lupe y un platillos delicioso que proviene de Yucatán, cochinita pibil gracias a Doña Dulce, la mama de Gaby.

Para los Latinos, la comida es todo. Es la forma en que damos la bienvenida a nuestros huéspedes en nuestra casa, y cómo mantenemos vivas nuestras tradiciones. En mi familia, la Cuaresma es algo que tratamos de hacer cada año. Una de mis formas favoritas de mantenerme alejada de las carnes rojas es comiendo mariscos, me encantan! Desde que era muy chica, mi mamá nos preparaba tostadas de jaiba cada año para celebrar la Cuaresma, es mi platillo favorito y hoy yo la preparo para mi propia familia. Me encantaría compartir esta receta con ustedes, y espero que también lo agreguen a sus recetas para la Cuaresma.

Tostadas de Jaiba

Ingredientes:

16  Carne de cangrejo, rallado

2 tomates roma 

2 chiles serranos o jalapeños, picados

1/4 cebolla, cortada en cubitos

puño de cilantro

1 aguacate, cortado en cubitos

1/2 taza de jugo de Clamato

5 cucharadas de jugo de ReaLime

Sal y pimienta al gusto

Tostadas de maíz para servir

Instrucciones:

En un bol, añade la carne de cangrejo y los ingredientes cortados en cubitos.

Añade el jugo de ReaLime así como el jugo Clamato, sal y pimienta, mezclar.

Sirve sobre tostadas de maíz y disfruta!

Como puedes ver esta receta es  muy fácil de preparar, pero llena de sabor. El jugo de Clamato da un sabor único a todas sus recetas de Cuaresma, de hecho, va de la mano a la perfección con la mayoría de las recetas de mariscos. Durante la Cuaresma siempre me aseguro de tener algunos para mis Cocteles de camarón, sopas de mariscos, micheladas e incluso en botanas como pepinos rellenos de cacahuates. Hay tantas cosas que puedes hacer con Clamato.
